- Follow up
In the beginning, the patient or the relatives are welcomed by the bk sisters with divine love. They are made comfortable at the reception and their demographic data is collected.
After this, the next team takes the detailed history of the patients. In this we get the information about the start & causes of addictions, their duration, any attempts made in the past to quit, reasons for failure, any associated diseases and current treatment if any is also taken into consideration.
Audio-visual education about addiction
A film on the education of various addictions like tobacco, alcohol etc and the harmful effects of these addictions, experiences of patients who have suffered from these addictions , experiences of the family members/ friends, experiences of doctors about treatments of various addictions, how Rajyoga meditation helps in quitting all these addictions is shown to all patients & their relatives.
Although all steps are important in de-addictions, counseling plays a major role. The experienced counselor listen to the patients &/or the relatives in a great details and assists the patients &/or relatives in finding out the strength of the patient. All cognitive distortions are corrected and specific advice is given on right thinking at right moment when the urge to take the addiction is very high. All possible attempts are made to break the associations between the negative habit & behavioral cues.
Examination & treatment by experts doctor
Medical history, followed by the general & systematic examination is done by the doctors. In our experience we’ve seen many cases of sub mucus fibrosis, leukoplakia, erythroplakia and few cases of oral malignancy. All the tertiary care centers and minor symptoms or withdrawals are treated symptomatically. We also give homeopathic placebo pills to the patients because of which patients do the regular follow up.
Role of Rajyoga Meditation
The secret of de-addiction with Brahma kumaris is the Rajyoga Meditation. Along with daily practice of Meditation, since it is a Gyan Yoga, patients also attend the daily spirituals classes. In our experience, patients leave their addictions because of the following reasons.
- Patients experience the super sensory bliss which gives a superior high than the bliss of addictions.
- Increase in will power.
- Because of release of endorphins, patients can tolerate the withdrawals if any.
- Rajyoga has lots of daily positive thoughts.
- Since no one in the Brahma kumaris centre is addict, patient gets company of good, positive people with clean atmosphere.
- The self respect of the patient is activated and he/she starts respecting the self and gains power to say `No’ to friends who offer them various tobacco, alcohol products.

critical stage if we want successful recovery. Most of the patients are defaulters and do not follow up regularly if they are not motivated. Relapse of the addictions is the major issue in complete de-addiction and hence it has to be deal with tactfully. Because of our Rajyoga centres which are there in every stations of Mumbai, it becomes easier for the patients to do the follow up.
